Jog, Frog, and Dog…This is the Sunday Blog!

Don’t worry, I am not slacking off. I have a test and several assignments due tomorrow. This entry will probably not be as long as the other ones, so please don’t be disappointed. Today, I am going to talk about a few things that might be relevant in sports fans lives. I am also going to give you all a top 5 list. I did not do much this weekend. I played a lot of poker, and watched the NBA All-Star festivities. Enjoy your week people.

I am going to start in New Orleans with the NBA All-Star Weekend. I am skipping the first two events. If you enjoyed watching people play obstacle course on a basketball court, you have some issues. Really, can’t the NBA think of two better events to bore us with? One they should think about implementing is Jordan vs Bird in a game of HORSE…no dunking. I would have been the most intrigued by a game of knockout with each team’s top player. Could you imagine that line up? Something really does need to be done about those first two events. The three point shoot out was pretty exciting. Charles Barkley needs to relax on Damon Jones. How many times could Barkley possibly tell us that Jones was worthless? Barkley annoys me to no extent because he refuses to give the Cavaliers credit. Cleveland must have treated him awful when visiting the city back in his playing days. Oh yeah, back to the three point competition. I really like to see shooters catch fire in this event. The three point shootout is one of the only all star events that can truthfully mesmerize a crowd. Think about how bad you want to see a player hit his 6th or 7th consecutive three point shot. The winner of the event, Jason Kapono is an immaculate three point shooter. He absolutely caught fire toward the end of his final rack. The three point shoot out is fun, but there needs to be an extra round like there was a few years back. I feel like we see a player hit a few shots, and toss him an award. The event is also over in the blink of an eye. The dunk competition still lacks too. Don’t get me wrong, we saw a few amazing dunks last evening, but it is nowhere near the competition it used to be. The NBA can take two different paths to fix this. They either need to allow the players to do anything props related. Raise the hoop to 20 feet, jump over cars, even have a high jump bar for players to jump over. The NBA can also add the competition element back into contest. I would have been thrilled to see LeBron, Vince Carter, Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard battle it out. I don’t want to see one superstar that used his imagination to capture the award (he didn’t even dunk the ball on the Superman dunk), or someone take his shoes off and repeat a dunk from the previous round. I want to see a battle of a bunch of competitive players that will do anything to win. Where is MTV Rock and Jock basketball when you need it? Those 25 and 50 point hoops used to work wonders for stats.

The Top 5 Touchdown Celebrations

Inspired by a reader’s question, I am going to tell you my five favorite touchdown celebrations. These are the ones that are my favorite, and are not necessarily the best.

1. Terrel Owens Standing on the Star

I hate this guy with a passion, but I love the creativity here. The sharpie was cool, but didn’t get the opponents blood flowing like this celebration did. What was TO thinking here? Did he really pose in the middle of the Cowboys logo? Did he really do this on the road, in a division rivals stadium? Damn right he did.

2. The Dirty Bird

I remember it clearly. “Hit Me Baby One More Time,” was dominating the airwaves, and Varsity Blues was the must see movie. The dirty bird was the first end zone dance that made me think to myself, “Wow is that a neat celebration.” Maybe the dance is a bit on the corny side, but the appeal of the dance lasted for a full season and then some. I knew that this dance caught on with the American public when I saw pee wee football legends doing the dirty after five yard gains. Johnny no longer cared about winning the game, he just wanted to showcase his dance moves.

3. The Lambeau Leap

“Tag team back again, check it to wreck it, let’s begin…Whoooomp there it is.” We all remember the time that Tag Team had their glorious one hit wonder in 1993. This was also the year that a tradition began in Green Bay. This is one of my favorite celebrations because it interacts with the fans. This NFL fad is still prominent today, and not solely by the Packers. We see NFL players every week taking a dive into the stands

4. Alvin Harper Dunking the Football

This was one of the better celebrations because not many people could do it. It takes a lot for me to think a football player could convincingly dunk a ball over the goal post. Not only could Harper throw it down, he might have been capable of hanging on the rim. I hated the Cowboys corruption of the NFL back in the 90’s. Cocaine became legal throughout the league, strippers were part of pre game warm ups, and booze filled the teams water bottles. Just ask Michael Irvin.

5. The Bob and Weave

I loved when the greatest show on turf put up six. There is no neater team dance than this one. This dance marked the beginning of the No Fun League. Mr. Tagliabue had seen enough, and began to drill teams with heavy fines fro excessive end zone celebration. This one wasn’t excessive, just 8 guys standing in a circle, rubbing in the fact that they’d just scored their 49th point of the day.

Check this video out of some touchdown dances: Not the greatest, just something to take a look at.

Honorable Mention

Deion Sanders high stepping down the sidelines.

The Mile High Salute

TO signs stuff with a hidden Sharpie

Joe Horn calls his mother on a cell phone in the goal post pad

Steve Smith burps the ball like it is a baby

Rawk and Roll!!!!!!

Here are some songs that I feel should be added to all music fans catalogue.

Jason Mraz – I’m Yours

This is his new single. I think it sounds excellent on the radio, but am positive it will be awful live. Give this song a shot. If you liked his other singles, I am almost sure you will enjoy this one. Thanks Houser.

Rhymefest – Man in the Mirror

This song will surprise a good amount of people. I have not listened to much of this guys music, but I found this song to be very well performed. It uses a sample of my favorite Michael Jackson song, and is combined with a spectacular series of rhymes.

Justin Timberlake – Chop Me Up

I know most people have heard this song, and probably have it on none of their playlists. This song is special because of the three artists that contribute to the song. Three Six Mafia, Timbaland, and JT all play their roles very well in this song. The, “Now I know ya got a buzz off that alcohol,” line hooked me on this song

Yael Naim – New Soul

This is the song you hear 45 times a day when watching television. You will know what massive company used this song to sell their newest product. “La la la la lalalalala la lala”

Usher – Moving Mountains

Here is the second single that will take the nation by storm. Get it now, and share it with your friends. This is another Timbaland beat that is simply amazing. This song sounds pretty good. This may be tough to come across. Please let me know if you need help.

Youuuuuuuuuu
This made me laugh the first time I saw it. Look at that man go.

If you allow players to use crazy props like cars, high jump bars, or flaming circles in the dunk contest you’ll have to start calling them mascots. Instead of dressing Dwight Howard up like Superman, you would have to dress him up like Moon Dog. I also like the current system where relatively unknown players participate. LBJ and Kobe get enough attention, let these kids have an event to make a name for themselves. Heres your next top 5 list…what are the top 5 best dunk contest dunks of all time?

  2. Hey just wanted to let you know, Mraz’s I’m Yours doesn’t suck live.

I’ve seen him perform it a good handful of times, and it sounds great.

    Here’s a live video:

  3. Rikki..Thanks for the post. I listened to it and thought it was pretty good. I saw Mraz three times with a band and thought he was awful. I think that my only chance for me to think he is good, is to see him solo or with that Toca character. I saw Mraz with a full band and thought he sucked…three times.

    KJ,

That was 2nd maybe even the best dunk contest in 15 yrs. There were 2 dunks that some people say may be in the top 5 in dunk contest history. I know when you watched that event you were excited to see what was going to come next. It was the first time I had that feeling since Vince Carter did it to me at AJ’s mom’s house in 2000. Who doesn’t want to see Kobe, LBJ, and all those guys but who says they are coming up with better dunks? Everyone wants a college football playoff but..

I appreciate the top 5 celebrations. Though “Inspired by a reader’s question” is a little weird. People getting mad at you answering all of Tyler from Philly’s question or was that just a controversial topic and you were just protecting my identity? I love the dirty bird!

I would also love to hear Dave’s question. I was going to ask the same one. If you want to give me credit for the “Tyler From Philly” you owe me that is fine.

Ps. I can not stand Skip and his brother counter parts. They are the most uninformed sports group I have ever heard!

…..maybe Air up There should be invited in 09′… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mt001pBcwjM

  5. I’m Yours became a hit with Mraz fans a long time ago, and based mainly on the awesome live performance. I prefer his live performances to the studio recording anyday.

  6. Thanks for the post. I saw him three times, and was not pleased once. I see the guy play acoustic solo shows via youtube and am blown away…What’s up with that?

  7. What up kieth,
So, Lebron does it again and wins the All-star mvp. So now he has two All-star MVP ’s do you think the voters will finally give him league mvp or, do they vote for chris paul if the hornets win the west? and props to touchdown dances, even though they are way to out of control now(Chad Johnson), you forgot Ernest Givens of the oilers the electric slide. Well peace out kardiac man.

  8. Keith,

He is his best with that toca guy or with his trio (jason, toca and the bass player Ian).

The whole band restricts him a bit, so he has to stay more towards the popluar songs. Give him another chance, there is a tour coming april/may, hopefully this one will change your mind.

haha, sorry to invade on your sports blog, with mraz.

  9. What are the chances Mraz has kissed a boy?

  10. Don’t be sorry, keep reading and feel free to comment on anything and everything you’d like. Thanks for reading and saying what you think in regards to Mraz. I checked out that video and think he is awesome with 2 or 3 people like you said. Maybe, MAYBE, I will give him one more shot if he does not tour with a full band.

  11. Tyler Cortelezzi Says:

    LOLLOLOLOL z

  12. Jeff Scott Says:

This is good stuff, but I have a question for you. If team USA was to make a “Dream Team” with current NBA players, to go to the Olympics, which 14 players would you add and why?

  13. Dave Williams Says:

what are the top 5 reasons why Mraz should give up his singing career?
